Verandah Posts and Timber Detail for Queenslander Homes
The Queenslander is a tradition of its own, and it is the reason Queensland is one of our larger interstate markets. Wide wrap-around verandahs, timber balustrade running the full length of the house, decorative valance and batten panels between the posts — there is more timber detail on a single Queenslander verandah than on most southern houses altogether.
Queensland verandah posts tend to be lighter in section than Victorian work, often with a longer plain shaft and the turning concentrated at the top and bottom. Fretwork brackets and valance panels are frequently the elements that have failed, since they carry no load and are the first to rot.
Classic Woodcraft reproduces all of it — posts, balustrade, valance, brackets and batten infill panels. Most Queensland orders are quoted from photographs, so nothing needs to be removed from the house or freighted south.
Specifying for the Queensland climate
Subtropical exposure is harder on timber than Melbourne's climate, so specification matters. LOSP treated pine performs well for painted work provided it is primed on all faces, including the end grain, before installation — raw end grain is the most common cause of premature failure we see. Where a naturally durable timber is preferred we supply Cypress, which holds up well in Queensland conditions.
