How to measure the radius of your existing rafter The radius is measured on the top edge of the rafter. On a complete bullnose rafter the curve is a quarter circle, so the height of the curve equals the radius (H = R). Lay the rafter on its side on a flat floor. Run a straight edge along the top edge of the straight section, out past the curve. Measure straight down from that line to the end of the curve on the top edge. That measurement is your radius. Measure the timber section (depth × thickness) on the straight part of the rafter. If the end of your rafter is broken, rotted or cut short, the height will read less than the true radius, and older hand-cut rafters often don't follow a perfect arc. Trace the curved end onto paper or cardboard and send us a photo with a tape measure in shot, or send us a short sample. We hold templates for dozens of rafter profiles and will match it.
